City Building and Construction Information
Permits

If you are planning to complete a property improvement project in Sterling, you may be wondering, “Do I need a permit?”

The City of Sterling has a long history of using a uniform building code. Currently, most projects undertaken in sterling fall under the 2006 International Building Code, Et. Al. (Plumbing, Mechanical and Gas) and the 2011 National Electric Code.

Under the 2006 IBC Et. Al. and the 2011 NEC, building permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by these codes.

A permit ensures that proper services are provided to safeguard life, health, general public welfare and property values.  Through the permit process, city staff will review permitted construction work and installations to ensure that they are done safely and in accordance with current requirements.  Regular inspections during construction not only can reveal minor problems that could avert costly repairs, but may also identify life-safety concerns.

In advance of when you wish to begin work, submitting all the required information about your project along with the permit application form will help to ensure a timely review and permit issuance.

Some projects may not require a building permit; however, they may require a zoning permit.  Examples of these projects are:fences, sheds 120 sf or less,

If you are unsure if your project requires a permit or if you have other questions, please contact Andy Prebble, City of Sterling, at 620-278-6278
