Certain special purpose vehicles (SPVs), which include golf carts, utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), and micro utility trucks are permitted to travel on city streets, provided they are equipped with the required features and are registered annually with the Sterling Police Department (SPD).
Chapter XIV, Article 6 of the City Code contains the regulations governing SPVs. Only those SPVs defined in State statute as golf carts, work-site utility vehicles (i.e. UTVs), and micro utility trucks are permitted on city streets. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs), pocket bikes and motorized scooters are NOT allowed. Permitted SPVs must be equipped with the following features to be operated on city streets:
- Sufficient brakes
- Head lights
- Tail and brake lights
- Rearview mirror
- Turn signal equipment
- Slow-moving vehicle sign (golf carts only)
SPD inspects all SPVs to ensure they are properly equipped. At the time of inspection, the operator must provide proof of insurance and pay the annual $30 registration fee. Upon a successful inspection, the operator is provided with an SPV license which must be clearly displayed on the back of the vehicle. SPV licenses are valid for one calendar year, i.e. January 1-December 31. Operators must register their vehicles and pay the $30 fee annually.
The application to register an SPV is linked below. Please call the SPD at (620) 278-2100 to schedule an inspection.
